Cheeseburger with crispy onion rings

It’s pretty much been burger central at the Ryder household over the last few weeks and I’m not even a little bit ashamed. Because let’s face it, burgers make the world go round. Amirite? I find that I’ve been craving them more often lately and I think it’s because I’ve been challenged by the folks from Hellmann’s to come up with a rocking burger recipe for their #RockYourBurger campaign. Now when it comes to burgers, I like ’em any style I can have ’em but a component that is ever present in my burgers is a good, healthy dollop of Hellmann’s mayonnaise. I have yet to find a shop-bought mayonnaise as delicious and creamy as Hellmann’s (It is after all the World’s no.1 mayo) and it’s therefore no surprise that I am always in possession of at least one jar. And so you can imagine my delight when they asked me to partake in their campaign.

Beer-battered onion rings

The burger I designed combines two of my loves. Juicy cheeseburgers and crispy, beer-battered onion rings. Because onion rings next to a burger is great, but onion rings ON a burger…now that’s perfection. The onion rings add just the right amount of crunch to the burger and let me just tell you, the person you serve these to will hail you the ultimate burger king/queen. Guaranteed.

Course: Burger, Cheeseburger, Onion rings
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 50 minutes
Author: Alida Ryder
Servings: 4 burgers

Ingredients

for the burger patties

  • 500 g beef mince
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves finely chopped
  • 1 cup fresh breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg beaten
  • handful chopped parsley
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • pepper to taste

for the onion rings

  • 2 large onions sliced into 1cm rings
  • 2 cups self-raising flour
  • 1 x 330ml can beer
  • pinch of salt
  • oil for frying

for the burger

  • Hellmann’s mayonnaise
  • Fresh bread buns halved and toasted
  • fresh lettuce
  • sliced cheese
  • sliced tomato

Instructions

  • For the burger patties, fry the onion and garlic until soft and fragrant then remove from the pan and allow to cool.
  • Mix the onion mixture with the remaining patty ingredients then form 4 burgers and place in the fridge for 20 minutes.
  • After 20 minutes, cook the burgers on a hot griddle/frying pan until cooked to your liking. Remove from the pan and allow to rest, covered, for 5-10 minutes.
  • For the onion rings, heat enough oil for deep frying in a saucepan.
  • In a bowl, combine the flour and salt then whisk in the beer until you have a thick, smooth batter. You might not need all the beer. I used around 3/4 of a 330ml can for my batter.
  • Coat the onion rings in flour and then in the batter then fry in the hot oil until golden brown and crisp.
  • Remove from the oil and drain on kitchen paper.
  • To make the burgers, add a generous dollop of Hellmann’s to the bottom half of the toasted bun then top the lettuce, tomato, patty and a slice of cheese. Add the onion rings then sandwich the the top piece of the bun.
  • Serve immediately.

  1. Wait…did you say…BURGERS??!I love burgers!!It’s my favourite food in the entire world and I have had burgers from all over South Africa…but a homemade burger is still my favourite 🙂

Here’s what you need to rock a burger:

    1) 100% pure beef patty
    2) Jalapeno
    3) Italian Relish
    4) Hellmann’s Mayo
    5) Mushrooms
    6) Cheese
    7) Tomato
    8) Lettuce
    10) Guacamole

Give me one of those and I’m smiling from ear to ear!!

  2. We have a burger and shake night once a month in our house and we see who can make the biggest, baddest burger and this is always a winner:

150g beef patty coated in aged cheddar, bacon, tomato, fresh guacamole, red onion and Hellmann’s mayo!

There’s always Hellmann’s mayonnaise in the fridge!

  3. May or may not have drooled all over my keyboard just looking at this. I am going nuts over these onion rings- they look SO perfect! I’ve gotta add this to the dinner menu ASAP!

  4. How would I rock my burger? By adding all my favourites of course. Bacon, pickled jalapeños, cheese and Hellmann’s. Yum! #rockyourburger

  5. As a child I loved putting my chips on the burger. I still do it today so that’s how I would rock my burger. Add a good spoonful of Hellmann’s and tomato sauce and I’m in heaven.

  6. I love the idea of adding onion rings to a burger. Not sure how I could top that but my favourite burger is topped with guacamole and I would add chillies to the mayo for a spicy kick. Love Hellmann’s! #RockYourBurger

  7. In our house we are completely addicted to both burgers and Hellmans Mayonnaise, well, maybe some of us more than others. Anyway, my husband and I have been on the quest for the perfect rocking burger for a few years now and we finally perfected it a few months ago. Our homemade patties are pretty similar to yours, the fried red onion and garlic make them super tasty. I also add some finely chopped streaky bacon to the patty mixture. We cook the patties on the braai and then top the toasted sesame seed buns in a very specific order. First a good helping of slightly vinegary homemade tomato and relish, then comes the beef patty, a crunchy lettuce leaf or two, some thinly sliced dill gerkins, caramelised onions (which we cook in lots of butter with about a tablespoon of finely chopped red peppers for extra flavour), a slice of mature cheddar cheese and last but most importantly a BIG dollop of Hellmans Mayo (which I mix with some freshly squeezed lemon). Oh boy, this truly is the best, most rocking burger ever. You’ve got to try it!

  8. Hi Alida

Thank you for your hamburger and onion rings recipes!

Our family love making hamburgers on the braai. We “complicate” your recipe somewhat by adding some powdered nutmeg and cloves, chopped thyme, a generous dash of Worchester sauce and a dash of Tabasco. Those burgers are even better the following day!

Thank you for all your delicious recipes.

  9. Friday nights are burger nights in our house and always comes with oooohs and aaaahs from friends and family who join us. Patties are handmade, quite chunky and with more or less the same recipe as yours. I do, however, add a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco and don’t put the garlic or onion in the burger mix. Our onions are slow cooked in the microwave in butter until they are golden. Fresh (homemade) pickles to add crunch and avo for creaminess, topped with a mix of tomato sauce and chutney mixed together, with a dash of mayo for decadence completes the picture to #RockYourBurger!!

  10. I have never tasted Hellman’s before!I either forget to put it into the trolley when we go do grocery shopping or I’ve taken the wrong mayo! The commercial alone looks so good & I can’t wait to actually try it!!

This is how I would rock a Burger: #RockYourBurger

    -1 x 100g pure beef patty
    -Iceberg lettuce
    -2 slices of tomato
-a generous amount of HELLMAN’S MAYO
-2 slices of individually wrapped cheese
    -2 rashers of bacon
    -a dash of creamy guacamole
    -Salt & Pepper

    How’s THAT for a ROCKING BURGER???Hmmmmm :-p
