How to make onion fritters

This recipe really couldn’t be simpler and is a great way to use pantry staples. If you don’t have feta cheese, feel free to leave it out. The end result will still be absolutely delicious.

  1. Start by slicing two large onions (you can use any onion variety for these fritters) into thin slices. Chop another two onions into fine dice. This will give the fritters a little extra texture.
  2. Make the batter by combining the flour, baking powder, salt, sugar and chilli flakes in a bowl.
  3. Whisk in the water and mix until smooth then stir in the onions and feta cheese (if using).
  4. Heat a large pot of canola or vegetable oil until hot then fry spoonfuls of the batter for a minute or two until they are golden brown and crisp.
  5. Carefully remove the cooked fritters from the oil with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  6. Serve with any dipping sauce of your choice.

Can I make these fritters ahead?

They really are best when they are freshly fried and crispy so I wouldn’t suggest making them in advance or freezing them. Luckily, they take minutes to make!

  1. I made these fritters over the weekend for family/friends dinner and they were easy to make and a huge hit with everyone! They all loved the dipping sauce as well.

  2. My husband and I absolutely #lovecloverfeta and use it in an array of dishes from pasta to salads. One of my favourite ways is to incorporate it into my potato bake – it adds extra creaminess and something special. I also love it in cheese muffins – irresistible!! I’ve entered on FB too and shared there.

    1. It’s really a ridiculously simple recipe Amy so I’m sure yours will be just as good. Just make sure your oil is hot enough so the batter starts frying the moment it hits the hot fat. Let me know how they turn out?

  3. This looks like such an incredible recipe. First and foremost I am about to go and buy myself a tub of #lovecloverfeta and get my cooking on to produce this delicious recipe! #simplydelicious. I’d like to make a really great beef burger stuff with feta, basil and bacon and make these incredible onion and feta fritters to accompany this meal. Mouthwatering!

  4. Ordinarily I would be all over this……BUT I hate onions. I eat spring onions, but not normal onions…such a pity! lol. Looks great though if you’re an onion lover!

It’s because of lunchboxes and school bag checks…I guess even if I was able to work from home in my pj’s, that part of Monday just sucks BIG TIME!

    1. Oh dear! You could do this exact recipe with lots of other vegetables though. I think courgette spaghetti could be quite cool and will give you a similar result to the onion. I’m glad I’m not the only one who hates Mondays! And YES! Those damn lunchboxes!!
