Boerewors Roll

This meal is for all the South Africans who are either already back at work or going back to work within the next few days! I am one of the lucky ones who will only be ‘back at work’ on the 17th of January, although I think only my husband and I are that lucky because we work for ourselves and from home.

I know when I get back from holiday the last thing I really want is to be thrown back into my regular routine and I want to draw out that holiday feeling for as long as I can. But I also know that I can’t be lazy and tanned forever so I try cooking in small doses to get myself back into the whole thing. That’s why Boerewors rolls are so fantastic. You can fire up the braai (barbecue) and get that holiday feeling (whilst making your neighbours jealous that you’re braai-ing mid-week) while doing very little work.

The easy tomato relish, although easy, is completely replaceable with tomato ketchup, but if you have a few extra minutes, I would suggest you try it. It really couldn’t be easier and it really is very tasty. One thing I won’t leave out though is the fried onions. There is just nothing like fried onions on a Boerewors Roll and unless you’re making Boerewors Rolls for 20, will only take you 7-10 minutes.

Enjoy these outside if possible with an ice-cold beer to really enjoy the last little bit of holiday fever going around. And even though it feels like it’s ages before you’re next holiday, just remember how you said “Wow, I can’t believe it’s December already” last year!

Boerewors Roll

Serves 4

2 large onions, thinly sliced

2 cans chopped tomatoes
1tbsn sugar
1tbsn balsamic vinegar
salt & pepper to taste

500g Boerewors (or sausage of your choice)
4 fresh Hotdog rolls

Wholegrain mustard, to serve
Coleslaw, to serve

  • Firstly, start with the onions. Heat about 2tbsn oil in a large pan and add the sliced onions. Gently fry for 5-10 minutes until the onions are soft and golden. Set aside.
  • For the tomato relish, add the chopped tomatoes and flavourings to a small pot and allow to reduce on a medium heat for 5-10 minutes until it’s thickened slightly.
  • In South Africa, Boerewors is almost ALWAYS braaied but you can also pan fry the sausage of your choice. Cook until it’s cooked through but still juicy.
  • Serve the boerewors in the fresh rolls with some wholegrain mustard, tomato relish and fried onions. Add some coleslaw on the side.

    Yum! I recently found someone that makes boerewors in the South of Taiwan…so guess what I’m making this weekend!
