The idea for The Potager was born two years ago. I wanted to create a candle designed specifically for a kitchen. One that’s beautifully scented without being overpowering, that works just as well while you’re cooking as it does when you’ve finally closed the kitchen for the night. I wanted it to smell like a walk through a kitchen garden. Citrus, soft florals and a touch of herbal sage. All my favourite scents.

After months of development with the incredibly talented team at Rekindle Candle Co., I think we got there.

Bright bergamot, grapefruit and lemon open things up, deep herbal sage runs through the heart of it, jasmine and freesia sits underneath. Pretty and soft without being sweet or overwhelming.

The vessel

The Potager comes in a hand-glazed ceramic pot – slanted like a little planter, smooth and weighty in the hand with a fitted ceramic lid, in the most beautiful shade of sage green. Handmade by a very talented ceramicist based in the Hemel & Aarde Valley in the Western Cape. I have a thing for beautiful vessels and I adore a candle that comes in one I can repurpose.

Once your candle is finished, the lidded pot makes a beautiful stove-side salt cellar, spice keeper or jam pot. That’s how it was designed.

The packaging features original botanical artwork by South African artist Abi Ryder (who happens to be my daughter and this is her first commissioned work ๐Ÿฅฐ).

Candle care

Trim your wick to 5mm before every burn. On the very first burn, let the wax melt all the way to the edges of the vessel before extinguishing – this prevents tunnelling and makes sure you get every last hour out of your candle. Never burn for more than 4 hours at a time, keep away from drafts and out of reach of children and pets.

A note from me

This is the first physical product I’ve ever made and I won’t pretend I wasn’t terrified. I’ve been feeding people through a screen for over a decade and making something you can actually hold, smell and put on your kitchen counter felt like a completely different kind of vulnerable. I hope it earns its place in your home the way it’s earned its place in mine.

Thank you for being here for this first one. It means more than you know.

With love,
Alida
