Serving suggestions

This salsa is absolutely delicious served as a dip with tortilla chips or as a topping for Mexican dishes like tacos, nachos, taquitos, enchiladas and burritos. It’s also delicious served as a salad for grilled chicken or seared fish.

Can I make this ahead?

Yes, this avocado salsa can be made a few hours in advance. Squeeze over a generous amount of lime juice to prevent the avocado from browning and only season right before serving to prevent the tomatoes from releasing too much liquid and making the salsa soggy.

FAQ

What’s the difference between avocado salsa and guacamole?

Guacamole is a mashed avocado dip which often has tomatoes, onions, cilantro and jalapeños added, but not always. Avocado salsa is a chunkier dip with cubed tomatoes, chopped onions and aromatics.

How do you cut an avocado for salsa?

Using a sharp knife, halve the avocado then remove the pit. Hold the avocado in your hand and carefully slice into the avocado, taking care not to cut through the skin, in a crosshatch pattern. Scoop the flesh out of the avocado skin and add to a large bowl. The avocado should be perfectly cubed for salsa.

How do you keep avocado salsa from turning brown?

The acid in lime juice/lemon juice will prevent the avocado from oxidizing quickly but after a few hours, the avocado will inevitably brown. You could press a piece of plastic wrap to the surface of the salsa to prevent oxygen exposure but once the salsa is made, it should be consumed within a few hours.
