There is nothing better than Christmas leftovers and this grilled ham and cheese made with leftover ham is the perfect snack or lunch recipe.

Leftover Christmas ham (gammon) with melty cheese and preserves is the perfect recipe to make with leftovers.

Ingredients

Full recipe and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

  • Leftover ham / Gammon.
  • Bread of your choice. Sourdough, Country loaf, thick-sliced white bread, etc.
  • Cheese. I used a combination of mozzarella, sharp cheddar and Havarti. Any good melting cheese will work well. Fontina, Monterey Jack, Gruyere and Raclette are all good options.
  • Preserves. This is optional but I think the sweetness works well with the salty ham and cheese. Onion jam, cranberry sauce, etc.
  • Butter.

How to make grilled ham and cheese

  1. Make the ham and cheese: Grate the cheeses and mix together. Spread the preserves on both slices of bread. Layer cheese and slices of ham together on bread of your choice then butter the outsides of each sandwich generously.
  2. Cook it: Place the sandwich in a large pan set over medium heat and cover with a lid. This will allow the cheese to melt quicker without burning the outside of the sandwich. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown and crisp with perfectly melty interiors. Remove from the pan and allow to rest for a 1-2 minutes before slicing and serving.
