A cookie box for Christmas packed with an assortment of homemade cookies.

I love putting together a box of homemade (and sometimes store-bought) cookies to gift to family and friends for Christmas. This year I filled the box with a few of my favorite cookie recipes as well as store-bought palmiers, chocolates and candy canes. The end product is a beautifully festive gift that is an absolute hit with anyone you give it to.

  1. Gather your recipes: Decide on the cookies you want to include then make sure you have all the ingredients, baking equipments, etc. necessary. I always use the best quality ingredients but I think especially around Christmas, it’s nice to use really good chocolate, vanilla, butter, etc. Go through each recipe then make a shopping list with everything you’ll need. Remember things like parchment paper!
  2. Get baking: The wonderful thing about cookie dough is that you can make it FAR in advance. Cookie dough freezes really well so in preparation of putting together cookie boxes, I would suggest starting your prep a few weeks or even months in advance. Cookie dough can easily be frozen for up to 3 months. Most cookies also bake really well from frozen so no need to thaw before baking. Baked cookies can also be frozen for a few weeks so if you are planning on gifting a lot of boxes, this is a great idea. Cookies with caramel, chocolate or jam can be refrigerated for up to a week in an airtight container.
  3. Gather extra treats: To make your box as festive as possible, add a few more cute bits like festive popcorn, chocolate balls, mini candy canes, chocolate kisses, peppermint candies or soft caramels.
  4. Assemble the boxes: I like using shallow cardboard boxes with lids but you could use any container of your choice. Line the box with parchment paper. Pack the cookies into the box, stacking a few, standing others on their sides, etc to create visual interest. Add extra candy, chocolate, etc. Close the box then finish with a beautiful ribbon and gift tag.

I like making sure there is a big variety of textures and flavors in any cookie box. I like to include a few super simple cookies and also a few ultra-decadent options. This year I went for my classic sugar cookies with spiced sugar, white chocolate cranberry cookies with pecans, raspberry sugar cookie bars, triple chocolate cookies, millionaire’s shortbread, snickerdoodles and store-bought palmiers.
