Easy healthy banana oat waffles

These healthy easy banana oat waffles have upped my breakfast game big time. Because honestly, who has time during rushed mornings to whip up a super healthy AND delicious breakfast? Well, me. And now you too. Because I’m not kidding you, these banana oatmeal waffles take all of 15 minutes to make, from start to finish. While the waffle maker heats up, you blend together all the ingredients. Pour the batter into the waffle iron, wait a few minutes, et voila. Healthy breakfast waffles are a go!

I based this gluten-free, dairy-free recipe on the most popular recipe on Simply Delicious for a few years now, my easy and healthy banana oat pancakes. The only difference here is that I doubled the amount of rolled oats used as this gives the waffle a bit more substance and they hold up better in the waffle maker. Other than that, you still only need 5 ingredients to make these (without the vanilla, which is totally optional). Hellooo lovely healthy breakfast!

Ingredients needed

  • Bananas. Use ripe bananas that are not too mushy.
  • Oatmeal. Rolled oats or old fashioned oats work best. Quick-cooking oats and steel cut oats won’t work for this recipe. If you’d prefer to use oat flour you can make the batter in a bowl instead of a blender. If you need this recipe to be gluten-free, make sure you use gluten-free oats. (All oats are naturally gluten free, however, they are often processed in plants that also process other foods containing gluten and cross-contamination can happen.)
  • Eggs.
  • Vanilla. (optional) Vanilla extract adds flavor but can easily be left out. You could also add a pinch of ground cinnamon for added flavor.
  • Baking powder.
  • Salt.

How to make healthy waffles (summary)

  1. Make the batter: Combine rolled oats, ripe bananas, eggs, vanilla extract, baking powder and salt in a blender and blend until smooth and thick.
  2. Cook the waffles: Generously spray a preheated waffle iron with non-stick cooking spray then spoon a quarter to a third cup of the batter into the waffle iron. Allow to cook until golden brown and cooked through, approximately 7-10 minutes. Remove and place on a wire rack to cool for a few minutes before serving.

Healthy waffle toppings:

These banana oat waffles are so versatile and can be topped with pretty much anything. These are some of my favorite combos:

  1. Fresh raspberries/banana and a drizzle of honey. (Super easy and fuss free!)
  2. A smear of nut butter, sliced apple and maple syrup/honey. Add a sprinkle of cinnamon too!
  3. Lemon curd yoghurt (or whichever yoghurt you love), fresh berries and yep, you guessed it, more honey.

I’m also loving the idea of adding some Middle-Eastern dukkah to a banana topped waffle to add a bit of spice. Yum! Whichever way you go, you honestly can’t go wrong. I guarantee these will be a hit at you breakfast table!

Can I make these waffles ahead?

Yes, these waffles are great to make in advance. Cook the waffles and allow to cool completely. Keep in an airtight container in the fridge. To reheat, simply toast for a minute or two until hot throughout. You can also freeze the waffles in freezer bags for up to 3 months and toast from frozen.

  1. I don’t understand putting quarter to third batter on the waffle maker. That is almost nothing. Maybe it depends on the size of the waffle maker I have the cuisine art griddle. Also what temperature should it be on? Thank you.

    1. I think it definitely depends on the size of your waffle maker. Mine makes two medium-sized waffles at a time. It also doesn’t have a temperature setting so I won’t be able to assist you with that but I would say medium-high to prevent the batter from burning.

      1. What type of waffle iron do you have? I’ve been trying to find one that makes this size waffle, but have not had any luck!

  2. I just made this, and thank goodness for a healthy banana oat recipe that actually works! We’ve done a lot of waffle and pancake recipes, both traditional and healthy, and this was the only one my toddler actually liked. I will definitely make this again!

  3. Amazing. This is easily, hands down, without a doubt my favorite way to use up bananas! I’ve made these several times and they are a huge … HUGE … hit. They freeze and reheat perfectly. Thank you for this recipe!

  4. This was a quick and super yummy waffle. I added just a few chopped pecans and topped with cary’s sugar free syrup for a healthy delightful breakfast

  5. Turned out great. Did cheat a little bit. Used a couple of packets of Quaker instant oatmeal maple and brown sugar and 2/3 rds cup of rolled oats instead of 1 cup

  6. This is my never-failing, healthy breakfast go-to. I’ve always been a waffle lover, but I’ve been on a mission to eat cleaner and I’ve been trying to get my family to do the same. With these, it is no task at all. Quick and light, these waffles prove that healthy eating doesn’t need to be expensive or bland. It is simply a delicious recipe that has endless possibilities that don’t ever seem to fail.

  7. I was wondering if you can mix these up the night before and have it in the refrigerator ready to go in the morning.. we are all a bit slow in the morning

    1. The banana might oxidize and brown in the batter. I’ve never tried it so I can’t say for sure unfortunately. You could make them ahead and just reheat in the toaster in the morning?

  8. What a divine recipe! The pictures of these waffles are stunning! I’m impressed! These are indeed the perfect breakfast recipe for busy mornings. My kiddos would go nuts over these waffles. Thank you for this inspiration! Dying to give the idea a try. All of your recommendations will surely help me a lot. Keep up the good work! <3

    1. Just made these today, and the calories depend on the yield you get. I only got about 2 round waffles, so for me, it came to about 308 kcal each.

    1. Unfortunately I haven’t had great success with steel oats. Rolled oats makes a much better oat flour and that’s what you need to give stability to the pancakes.

  9. Hi Alida

Abserlutly loved this recipe they come out so well an with rasberies, cream an honey we’re a huge hit with the kids… the only part I’m struggling with is how much better should be in each waffle to match the nurtrion serving info you provided pleas as I’m geting 3 waffles per batch useing 3 table spoons of batter per waffle

    Thank you kind reguards

  10. These are the best! They are so flavorful and I always pair it with some fresh fruit! I get so many compliments on them and they are so healthy and easy! A staple in my household! Thank you for this amazing recipe!

      1. These are great! I add lots of cinnamon and vanilla and then use a mini waffle maker for my toddler. I serve with a little peanut butter, and he can’t get enough.

    1. These are a favourite in our home. We love these. So easy to make and my kids love helping by adding all the ingredients into the blender. We always top these with a mixture of thawed frozen berries.

  11. I have made these twice and each time doubled or quadrupled the batch. My only complaint is that I can’t keep these made enough. I have a 4, 2, and 11 month old. They all eat them and love them. This is a clean, nutrient dense waffle and it feels like a treat. Make a giant batch because this recipe isn’t big enough ? (because we all love them and cannot eat just one). They are delicate taking them in and out of our waffle maker but just go slow and eat the ones that fall apart, you don’t have to share those. ? Lay the leftovers on a sheet pan to cool and then stack and freeze. Toast them in the toaster. We did two or three times in the toaster so I could try and make them crispy. It works! For me homemade waffles are never as crispy as the frozen ones but the quality is so much better with homemade and this recipe is so clean, I don’t feel guilty my whole family eating a ton of them. Great recipe!

  12. I was very impressed with this recipe. My bananas were frozen and my oats were past the recommended expiration date on the bottom of the canister, but it still worked. I also added cinnamon, nutmeg and a teaspoon of sugar.

  13. This is a very good, healthier waffle recipe. I am surprised and impressed!

I halved the quantities it as I was alone, and served it with:
    1/2 apple
    some chopped pecans
handful of frozen blueberries, heated in a mug in the microwave to get the liquid out (very nice, as the liquid soaks into the waffles)
    sprinkling of cinnamon

I recommend the re-warmed frozen blueberries, because the liquid soaks into the waffles and it was moist and sweet enough that I didn’t need any maple syrup! So extra healthy!

        1. Hi there! Really loved the recipe. I substituted minute oats because that’s all I had and they were extremely delicate in fact most of them fell apart during extraction from the waffle iron but were Still delicious. If I had used the recommended oats do you think I would have had better luck?
