Ingredients and Substitutions

These delicious applesauce fritters are made with a super simple batter, based off my pumpkin fritters. I’ve included ingredients and instructions in the recipe card for either glazing the fritters with a simple cinnamon glaze or dusting them with cinnamon sugar. They’ll also be delicious with the caramel sauce recipe used with the pumpkin fritters.

  • Flour.
  • Baking powder.
  • Salt.
  • Sugar.  I used granulated white sugar but soft brown sugar can also be used.
  • Spices: I used cinnamon, all spice, ground ginger and nutmeg to add warmth and fragrance to the fritters, plus what is a fall treat without all those warm spices? A teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice can be substituted. A teaspoon of vanilla extract can also be added.
  • Apple sauce. Unsweetened apple sauce is great to control the sweetness. If the apple sauce you’re using contains sugar, adjust the sugar slightly to prevent an overly sweet fritter.
  • Eggs.
  • Milk. I used whole milk/full cream milk but any milk can be substituted.
  • Grated apple. The apple adds texture, moisture and great apple flavor to the fritters. I used a Pink Lady apple but any apple variety will work. Granny Smith, Fuji, Honeycrisp, etc.
  • For the cinnamon sugar: You’ll need superfine or caster sugar and ground cinnamon.
  • For the cinnamon glaze: Powdered sugar/icing sugar, milk, ground cinnamon.

How To Make Applesauce Fritters

  1. Batter: Whisk together dry ingredients in a medium bowl. Whisk together the applesauce, eggs and milk then pour into the dry ingredients. Mix then fold in the grated apple.
  2. Fry: Fry spoonfuls of the batter in hot oil until golden brown and cooked through. Remove and allow to drain.
  3. Coat: Make the cinnamon sugar or glaze then coat the fritters before serving.

Can I Make This Ahead?

The fritters are best eaten within an hour of frying but any leftover fritters can be kept in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Reheat in the air fryer before serving.

Notes

Why did my apple fritters get soggy?
If the oil you’re frying in isn’t hot enough or you overcrowd the pan with batter, your fritters are more likely to be soggy. Make sure the oil is hot enough – I prefer frying at around 350°F/180°C.
How wet should fritter batter be?
The batter should be thin enough to drop off a spoon but not so thin that it’s watery. As thick as pancake batter is a good guide.
