How to Build Your Christmas Cookie Box

🎄 Choose Your Container:

  • Traditional tins for a classic look.
  • Clear cellophane bags tied with ribbon for individual portions.
  • Decorative boxes lined with parchment or tissue paper.
  • Mason jars for a rustic presentation.
  • Bakery boxes for a professional appearance.

🎄 Layer Strategically:

  • Start with larger, sturdier cookies on the bottom.
  • Add crumpled parchment or tissue paper between layers to prevent shifting.
  • Place delicate or decorated cookies on top.
  • Use small paper cups or cupcake liners to separate different varieties.

🎄 Create Visual Balance:

  • Alternate colors and textures.
  • Don’t cluster all the chocolate cookies together.
  • Mix shapes and sizes for interest.
  • Make the top layer especially attractive – it’s what people see first!

🎄 Add Finishing Touches:

  • Add small candy canes, chocolate balls, truffles or caramel popcorn for some extra texture and color.
  • Tie boxes with festive ribbon or twine.
  • Attach a small card listing the cookie varieties.
  • Include a handwritten note for personal gifts.
  • Add a sprig of fresh rosemary or pine for aroma and decoration.

Smart Baking Schedule

Don’t try to bake all seven varieties in one day! I try to make a few batches of dough per day, portion and freeze the cookies then bake them over two days. Here’s a manageable approach of you want it slightly more spread out:

Week 1:

  • Make the dough for the candy canes, pinwheel cookies and sugar cookies. They all use a sugar cookie base so you’ll have all the ingredients ready to go. Colour the dough red for the pinwheels and candy canes and shape. Roll out and cut the Christmas sugar cookies. Freeze all the shaped cookies on baking sheets then transfer to freezer bags.

Week 2:

  • Make white chocolate macadamia and chocolate chunk cookie dough. Portion out with an ice cream scoop, freeze on baking sheets and transfer to freezer bags.

Week 3:

  • Make shortbread dough for the thumbprints and cookie sticks. Shape and bake.
  • Bake remaining cookies a day or two before gifting, allow to cool completely then store in airtight containers or the fridge.

Day Before Gifting:

  • Assemble boxes.
  • Add finishing touches.

Most of these cookies keep for 5-7 days in airtight containers and many freeze beautifully, so you can spread the baking over several weeks!

Storage Tips for Cookie Box Success

Before Gifting:

  • Store each variety separately in airtight containers.
  • Keep crispy cookies (shortbread) away from soft cookies (chocolate chunk).
  • Don’t assemble boxes more than 24 hours before gifting.

For Recipients:

  • Include a small note about storage if giving early in the season.
  • Suggest they keep cookies in an airtight container at room temperature.
  • Most will stay fresh for 5-7 days.

For Shipping:

  • Avoid cookies dipped into chocolate unless you temper the chocolate first.
  • Choose sturdier cookies (avoid delicate decorated ones).
  • Pack very securely with plenty of padding.
  • Ship early in the week to avoid weekend delays.

FAQ

Do I have to make all seven cookie varieties?

Not at all! Choose 3-5 favorites for a great assortment, or make all seven if you want an impressive variety. Even 3-4 types make a beautiful gift box. I also have a ton of other cookie recipes so choose the ones that appeal to you most.

How far in advance can I bake these cookies?

Most keep well for 5-7 days at room temperature in airtight containers. They can also all be frozen for up to 3 months (minus the chocolate dip on the cookie sticks and the jam on the thumbprints).

What’s the best way to package cookies as gifts?

Use tins, decorative boxes, or clear cellophane bags. Layer with parchment paper, tie with ribbon, and add a small card listing the cookie types.

Can I freeze assembled cookie boxes?

It’s better to freeze cookies separately and assemble boxes 1-2 days before gifting. Thaw at room temperature for best texture.

How many cookies should I include in each gift box?

For a nice assortment, aim for 12-18 cookies total (2-3 of each variety). Adjust based on your box size and recipient.

Which cookies travel/ship best?

Chocolate chunk, white chocolate macadamia, the thumbprints and the sugar cookies are most durable. Avoid heavily decorated or chocolate-dipped cookies for shipping.
