Cinnamon Sugar Star Pastry Wreath

I love a good last-minute recipe and this cheerful star puff pastry wreath is exactly that. Layers of store-bought puff pastry, butter and cinnamon sugar baked into a festive wreath is the perfect easy Christmas morning breakfast or emergency snack when unexpected guests turn up.

Cinnamon Sugar Puff Pastry Star Wreath

I love that this recipe is giving croissant vibes without any of the fuss that goes into making croissants at home. Rich, flaky and buttery with just the right amount of sweetness. Using a star cookie-cutter also means that the bites are small so perfect to serve with a cup of coffee or tea.

Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Store-bought puff pastry. Use the best quality, all-butter puff pastry you can find. You could use crescent roll dough for this but I think there might be quite a bit of wastage due to the shape of the dough.
  • Butter. I used salted butter but unsalted butter can be substituted.
  • Caster sugar. This is also sometimes called superfine sugar, it’s a very finely ground sugar. Use granulated sugar as alternative.
  • Ground cinnamon.
  • Egg.
  • Powdered sugar/icing sugar.

How to make a Puff Pastry Wreath

  1. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Lay a sheet of puff pastry onto a lightly floured surface then brush over half of the melted butter. Mix together the cinnamon and sugar then sprinkle over, generously.Brush the rest of the butter over the other sheet of pastry then sandwich, butter-side-down, onto the cinnamon sugar. Refrigerate for 10 mins.
  2. Use a festive cookie cutter and cut out shapes – I tried not to waste any so I used a round cutter too. I used those shapes to add structure to my wreath. Refrigerate the shapes again while you preheat the oven to 180C/350F.
  3. Assemble the stars into a wreath on your prepared baking sheet then brush with egg wash and pop in the oven for 15-20 min until golden brown.
  4. Add a festive bow and dust with icing sugar then serve.

Can I make this ahead?

Absolutely! The puff pastry wreath can be assembled a few hours (even the night) before and kept covered in the fridge. Any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container and will last for up to 3 days at room temperature. You could also assemble the wreath then freeze for up to 3 months. Bake from frozen until crisp and golden.

Serving Suggestions

I think this is the perfect addition to your Christmas morning festivities – especially since it can be made in advance. It will also be a great addition to a dessert table and makes a fabulous snack with a cup of coffee.
