Easy Watermelon Agua Fresca

This watermelon agua fresca recipe is a delicious, refreshing treat. The perfect drink to serve on hot days.

 

What is Agua Fresca?

Agua Fresca is a refreshing Mexican drink made of water, fresh fruit, lime juice, sweetener (optional) and sometimes herbs like fresh mint or basil. It is the perfect drink to make or serve in Summer when there is an abundance of fresh fruit in season. Watermelon is my personal favorite but agua Fresca can be made with other fruit like pineapple, melon (cantaloupe/honeydew), berries (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries), mango, guava, cucumber, etc. can all be used. Want to turn it into a delicious cocktail? Simple stir in a shot of Β tequila, vodka or gin.

Ingredients

  • Fresh watermelon. Use the ripest watermelon you can find. I often freeze ripe watermelon and use it for this recipe too.
  • Water.Β 
  • Fresh lime juice.Β 
  • Sweetener. I used simple syrup but white sugar, honey, agave nectar or sugar substitute of your choice can be used too.

How to make watermelon Agua Fresca

Cube the watermelon then add to a blender and pour in cold water, the juice of 2 limes and a few tablespoons of sweetener (sweeten to your taste). Blend until smooth then strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve into a large pitcher/jug. Fill serving glasses with ice cubes then pour over the Agua Fresca and garnish with watermelon, fresh mint sprigs and lime slices.

Can I make this ahead?

Yes, this recipe can be made a few days in advance and kept in airtight containers in the fridge. Leftovers can also be frozen for up to 3 months.

Ingredients

  • 5 cups watermelon cubed
  • 4 cups cold water
  • ΒΌ cup fresh lime juice (approximately 2 limes)
  • 3-4 tbsp sweetener to taste

Instructions

  • Combine the cubed watermelon, water, lime juice and sweetener to a blender.
  • Blend until completely smooth.
  • Strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve into a large pitcher/serving jug.
  • Pour the watermelon Agua Fresca into glasses filled with ice and garnish with watermelon slices, lime slices and fresh mint sprigs.
