5 Easy Homemade Salad Dressings

Store-bought salad dressings are fine and all, but nothing beats a homemade dressing. Bright, punchy with plenty of flavor and you actually know what’s gone into it. No weird emulsifiers or preservatives. It also happens to be incredibly budget-friendly and you probably have most of the ingredients in your pantry already!

Greek Salad Dressing in glass jar.

1. Easy Greek Salad Dressing

Bright, tangy and loaded with oregano, garlic and lemon, this is the dressing that goes with everything. Perfect over a classic Greek salad or as a quick marinade for chicken.

Lemon Parmesan Dressing in glass jar.

2. Lemon Parmesan Salad Dressing

Bright lemon meets salty Parmesan in what might be the most versatile dressing on this list, and my most-used. Incredible over green salads and makes a bag of arugula taste like something out of a restaurant kitchen.

3. Homemade Caesar Dressing

Rich, garlicky and so much better than the store-bought version. Once you’ve had homemade Caesar, you can’t go back. I like mine heavy on the anchovies but start with one or two if you’re a beginner, you can always blend in more.

5. Soy Honey Salad Dressing

Sweet, savory and absolutely addictive. The combination of soy sauce, honey, toasted sesame oil and fresh ginger makes this an instant favorite. Unreal over Asian-inspired salads, rice bowls and cold noodles.

Tips for making the best salad dressings

  1. Use fresh ingredients. Your salad dressing will taste so much better if you squeeze your own lemon juice, mince your own garlic and grate your own Parmesan cheese. Simple recipes with few ingredients are best with quality ingredients.
  2. Mix up the oils. If a salad dressing calls for olive oil, don’t get too hung up on it. Yes, olive oil is the best in Greek dressing but if it’s out of your budget or you just don’t have any at the moment, substitute with whatever oil you have.
  3. Make it ahead. Having a jar of homemade salad dressing in the fridge is a small joy. Knowing you can quickly transform a boring salad into a delicious side dish in seconds makes dinner just a little less stressful.
