Easy Sticky Garlic Chicken

Sticky garlic chicken is an easy and super tasty dinner recipe served with steamed rice and greens of your choice.

  • Chicken. I used skinless, boneless chicken thighs but chicken breasts can also be used.
  • Hoisin sauce. 
  • Soy sauce. 
  • Rice vinegar. Lemon juice or white vinegar can also be used.
  • Mirin (optional).
  • Water.
  • Sugar. Honey can be substituted.
  • Cornstarch.
  • Sesame oil.
  • Ginger.
  • Garlic. I would recommend using fresh garlic for the best flavor.
  • Rice, for serving.
  • Greens, for serving. Broccoli, Green beans, spinach, Bok Choy, Cabbage, etc.

How to make sticky garlic chicken

  1. Cook the chicken: Cube the chicken into bite-sized pieces then transfer to a mixing bowl. Add sesame oil and season with salt. Mix well. Cook the chicken in a hot pan or skillet until golden brown on all sides then remove from the pan and set aside.
  2. Make the sauce: Mix the soy sauce, Hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, mirin, sugar and cornstarch together. In the same pan you cooked the chicken in, add the rest of the sesame oil, the ginger and the garlic. Saute for a few seconds then pour in the sauce. Cook until the sauce has thickened then add the chicken and any of its resting juices back into the pan. Cook for a few minutes until glossy and the chicken is cooked through.
  3. Serve: Serve the chicken and sauce over rice (or noodles) with greens of your choice. Scatter with sliced chillies and cilantro/coriander (or sliced spring onions) and serve.

For the sauce

  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp ginger crushed
  • 6 garlic cloves crushed/minced
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp mirin
  • ¼ cup water
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp cornstarch
