Garlic Bread Grilled Cheese

A grilled cheese sandwich is always a good idea, but leveled up with garlic herb butter, it becomes completely irresistible and makes for the best grilled cheese sandwich. This is delicious served on its own for a simple lunch or as a side dish to tomato soup.

Ingredients

Full grilled cheese recipe with instructions can be found in the recipe card. 

  • Bread. I used sourdough but feel free to use any bread of your choice. White bread, Whole wheat, etc.
  • Cheese. I like using a combination of mature/sharp cheddar, mozzarella and Gruyere. Other good options are Swiss, Provolone, Monterey Jack or American cheese. Brie is also delicious and would make your sandwich just a little bit fancier.
  • Butter. 
  • Fresh garlic. 
  • Dried oregano.

How to make grilled cheese

  1. Make the garlic butter: Melt the butter then add the crushed garlic and dried oregano. Set aside.
  2. Assemble the sandwiches: Grate the cheese and mix to combine. Slice the bread into thick slices. Distribute the cheese between half of the slices of bread then sandwich with the remaining pieces of bread. Brush the outside of the bread liberally with the garlic butter.
  3. Cook: In a large pan, skillet or griddle set over medium heat, cook the sandwiches butter side down. I like covering the pan with a lid to allow the cheese to melt faster. Cook the sandwiches for 3-4 minutes on the one side. Brush the other side with the remaining garlic butter then gently flip over and cook for another 3-4 minutes until golden brown on both sides with the cheese completely melted inside. Remove from the pan, allow to rest for 1 minute then slice and serve.

Can I make grilled cheese in an Air Fryer?

Yes! I love making grilled cheese in an air fryer. Place the assembled sandwich in the air fryer basket then cook at 200ºC for 3-4 minutes then flip over, brush with butter and cook for another 2-3 minutes until golden and toasted.
