Air fryer apples with cinnamon and apples

Our household has fallen in love with these soft, juicy apples cooked in the air fryer. They are subtly sweet and perfectly scented with cinnamon making them taste exactly like apple pie filling. We love it over vanilla ice cream for a no-fuss dessert or treat but our favorite way of enjoying them is to serve them over Greek yogurt for a gluten-free breakfast.

Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Apples. I used Granny Smith apples but you could use any apple of your choice. I prefer a tart, crisp apple as they cook so much better and hold their shape and flavor well. Gala, Honey Crisp or Fuji apples are all good options.
  • Brown sugar. Honey or maple syrup can be substituted.
  • Melted butter. Use any oil of your choice – coconut oil, avocado oil or olive oil are all good dairy-free and vegan options. Brown butter adds even more flavor.
  • Vanilla extract.
  • Ground cinnamon. Other warm spices like ginger, nutmeg, cardamom and allspice are all delicious with apples. Apple pie spice can also be used.
  • Lemon juice.

How to cook apples in an air fryer

  1. Peel and chop the apples into chunks (you could do apple slices too) approximately 1-2cm/½-inch big. Add the apples to a large bowl then add the melted butter, sugar and flavorings. Toss to coat the apples.
  2. Place the apples in the air fryer basket in a single layer then air fry for 15 minutes at 350°F/180°C then for another 5-10 minutes at 400°F/205°C until the apples are caramelized around the edges and soft. Transfer to a serving bowl then pour over the syrup from the bottom of the air fryer. Serve.

Can I make this ahead?

Yes! Air fryer apples are fantastic prepared in advance and kept in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. This makes it a great meal prep recipe for breakfasts or easy snacks. Leftovers can be stored the same way.
