Homemade Teriyaki Sauce
This homemade teriyaki sauce recipe is packed with flavor and an incredibly easy sauce to make at home. Made with pantry staples, you’ll never want to use store-bought sauce again after trying this recipe.

Ingredients and Substitutions
- Soy sauce. Use Tamari or Coconut Aminos for a gluten free version.
- Rice vinegar. Also called rice wine vinegar, this adds delicious flavor and acidity. Lemon juice or lime juice can be substituted. Mirin or sake is also often used but as it’s not an ingredient most people have in their homes, I didn’t include it in this recipe.
- Fresh ginger and fresh garlic.
- Honey and brown sugar. Maple syrup can also be used if you want to keep this recipe vegan.
- Cornstarch.

How to make homemade teriyaki sauce
Combine all the ingredients in a small saucepan and whisk together. Place over medium-high heat then bring to a simmer. Allow to cook for 5 minutes until the sauce has thickened then remove from the heat and use.
Can I make this ahead?
Homemade Teriyaki sauce can be made up to a week in advance and kept in an airtight container or jar in the refrigerator. I prefer heating the sauce in the microwave for a minute before using.

Serving suggestions
We love using teriyaki sauce as a glaze in teriyaki salmon or in teriyaki chicken with garlic rice and vegetable dishes like roasted broccoli or sugar snap peas for a simple but delicious weeknight dinner. It makes a great marinade for steak or pork ribs and is a delicious dipping sauce for chicken wings or chicken nuggets.
